Super Bowl XLV & Terrible Towels

Super Bowl XLV is upon us and this major US sporting event, which takes place on Sunday, sees Mike Tomlin's Pittsburgh Steelers come up against Mike McCarthy's Green Bay Packers. The clash will be held at the phenomenal Cowboys Stadium for the first time, and looks set to be a real cracker!

Popular Super Bowl Search Terms

Each and every year, the Super Bowl causes a real stir within the search environment and Google will be sure to provide us with yet another report detailing popular search queries and trends. Last year, New Orleans Saints were the most searched for team, whilst Peyton Manning was the most searched for player. Interestingly, Kim Kardashian (the then girlfriend of Reggie Bush) was also a top search query, but as Bush won't be playing this year, and as Kim has since moved on to dating basketball player Kris Humphries, she is unlikely to appear at the top of Google's search trend data.

Super Bowl Predictions

We predict that the Green Bay Packers will be the most searched for team this year, as they are favourites to win. What's more, we also think that Christina Aguilera and the Black Eyed Peas will be searched for fairly frequently as they'll be in Texas, performing at various stages throughout the game. I've no-doubt that a few of the companies choosing to advertise throughout the Super Bowl will also feature on Google's list - and I should think so too after shelling out around $3 million for just a 30 second advert! Madness!

Pittsburgh Steelers Terrible Towels

One of the most interesting developments which has taken place in the run up to Super Bowl weekend (aside from the announcement that there will be no cheerleaders for the first time in 45 years), comes in the form of an increase in search volume and the sales volume of 'Terrible Towels' (which is the fan symbol associated with the Pittsburgh Steelers). The gold and black towels were created back in 1975 and really represent the Steelers and the city of Pittsburgh.

Over recent weeks, Pittsburgh-based businesses have seen an increased demand from outside of Pennsylvania for the 'Terrible Towels'. Google's Pittsburgh office has reported that web searches for Terrible Towels were up 1,000 percent across the globe, and this volume was 25% higher than the overall search volume associated with 'Cheese Heads' which are the oversized hats worn by Green Bay Packers fans.

So, if you want to show your support for the Pittsburgh Steelers, why not get yourself a Terrible Towel?
